First Registered Standardbred Trotter arrives in KZN.
El Gloriousa (AUS), a bay gelding of 15.1hh has arrived from Australia, and is now settled at his new home at the South African Jockeys Academy at Summerveld. Paul Gadsby, senior riding instructor at the academy describes him as a "grand little horse with a sweet temperament".
Introduced to the web of rural Shonweni tracks and roads and first driven by Thomas Labuschagne and Gary Molloy, "Glory" with sulky behind raised eyes everywhere. Both Thomas and Gary were impressed and exhilarated with the experience of driving a Standardbred. The incorporation of "Harness race-driving" into the curriculum of apprentice jockeys is presently under discussion, and it is anticipated that Harness Racing will provide a useful additional stream of income generation for heavier, older and retired jockeys.
A further 60 Trotters are expected to be shipped from Sweden in August 2007.
