Harness Racing Formally Licensed
A milestone in the introduction of harness racing to South Africa was achieved today when the country's third Racecourse Operator's license was formally issued to the Harness Racing Association of South Africa.
"This sets in place for us another of the cornerstones required, and gives our international sponsors some added confidence in South Africa's ability to develop locally one of the world's biggest equine sports" said HRSA chairman Dean Latimer.
Harness racing is already underway at the northern KZN town of Dundee, and it is expected that Durban will see a fully professional version of the sport by the second quarter of 2008. Negotiations with the Office of the Premier and Gold Circle are underway to establish a final plan for the first series of live races in Durban.
The KZN Department of Sport and Recreation is supportive of the initiative and has expressed satisfaction that the synergies of harness racing with traditional horse-racing will provide new opportunities for rural economic growth, as well as an opportunity for participation in the rewards of horse-racing by previously disadvantaged individuals.
Unlike thoroughbred racing, harness racing embraces a capacity for inclusiveness, as competent amateurs and equine enthusiasts can be licensed to own, train and drive their own horses in races.
